Thankfully, in games like Roblox, you can call yourself whatever you want, so you don’t have to live with an incredibly bad decision. Here’s how to change your Roblox display name.

The Roblox devs have actually been tinkering with the ability to change display names for a few months now. They implemented the feature back in February, but then it was almost immediately taken back down because people were abusing it. Last week, though, the feature was brought back on a trial basis to see if they could make it work without letting jerks take advantage of it.

How to Change Your Roblox Display Name

With this new update, changing your display name is a snap. Just visit your account details page, click settings, and click the little pencil box next to “Display Name.” You can make the name anything you want. Whatever you set the name to is what will appear over your character’s head, in chat, and in player lists. Bear in mind, your username will be unchanged, and you’ll still need it to log into your account.

You can change your display name as many times as you want, and it won’t even cost you any Robux, nor do you require any kind of special subscriptions. There are, however, a few rules:

Releases

The feature was first released on February 18, 2021, for one hour in Germany to test the feature to a relatively small audience. Players outside of Germany could have used a virtual private network to access the update. During this release, some players created display names containing inappropriate phrases or symbols. As a result, all accounts with these display names were terminated.

It was re-released on April 14, 2021, for over a day in Germany. Like the previous Germany release, players outside of Germany could have used a virtual private network to access the update.

Finally, on June 8, 2021, it was released worldwide.

Display names replace the player’s username on the leaderboard, username above the player’s head, and usernames in the chat in experiences that have display names enabled. The leaderboard shows the player’s display name and handle.

Criticism

Many users have criticized display names for making it easier to impersonate other players. Sometimes, games only show their normal username instead of the display name (which is annoying). In an effort to prevent impersonation, usernames of some famous YouTubers and administrators were censored in the May release of the update. However, display names created before this update remain unaffected.

Lots of users try to impersonate famous YouTubers by adding a typo to the YouTuber’s Username. However, it is easy to see that they are fake due to a typo.

How to change your display name in Roblox

Display names in Roblox are an exciting new feature that is going to allow players to use whatever name they want for free! Since usernames are becoming harder and harder to come by due to the popularity of the platform, you will now be able to use something that might have been taken already!

It should be known that you can only change the name every seven days. Your username will remain important if you want friend to message you. It will be accessed by using the @ symbol in front of it. The display name will only change how it is displayed in game, chat, and on player lists.

Changing Your Display Name

To change your Display Name in Roblox, you will first need access to changing it. This feature is being rolled out slowly, so you might not have the ability to change it right now. To check if it’s available, head over to your Settings Page in Roblox. Look just below Account Info and see if you find Display Name, which would be right above Username. If you see that label, click on the icon to the right of it, and you will get a popup allowing you to change your name. Select whichever display name you would like, and it will be changed!

If you don’t see that on your profile page, then unfortunately you will not be able to change your Display Name at this time. This feature is going to be rolling out slowly according to the official post. It looks like it will take at least a few months before everyone has this ability, so you might need to wait for a good while.
